Locally owned stores rely on service to battle bigger retailers (Saginaw News, Nov. 28, 2008)

Food not withstanding, customer service both in the store and after the sale is the best way for smaller retailers to compete with larger corporate-owned sellers, said Kevin Keith, senior vice president and director of brand development for 22squared, an Atlanta-based advertising agency.

 

"Word of mouth is going to play very strongly," he said.

 

Shoppers are looking for a unique experience, Keith said. Local stores with quality products in settings that aren't cookie-cutter similar to the next store can provide that, he said.
